Facial Esthetic Therapies utilize a pharmaceutical known as Botulinum Neurotoxin Type A, more commonly referred to as Botox and Dysport. These drugs are potent neuromodulators that have gained major popularity due to their cosmetic and therapeutic effects. These pharmaceuticals are injected into the muslces of the head or neck. Once injected, they work within two mechanisms of action:
- Muscle Relaxation: These neuromodulators directly act on the muscles they are injecting into, causing them to relax. Relaxing these muscles often helps patients who are suffering from TMD symptoms. Also, this action is what allows for their cosmetic effects such as wrinkle removal!
-Pain Perception: Studies have shown that the usage of these pharmaceuticals can diminish a patient’s perception of pain in the affected area overtime. This can help manage one’s symptoms longterm!
Dentists in Saskatchewan are now able to perform Facial Esthetic Therapies, starting in July, 2024! Dental practices who meet our governing body’s criteria will now be allowed to use these substances in a variety of treatments, such as:
- Cosmetic Therapy (such as wrinkle removal)
- Headaches and Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD)
- Clenching and Bruxism
Although this treatment is effective, it is not for everyone. It is important to first have a consult with your dental team to see if Facial Esthetic Therapy is right for you.
